How to Get SAP PM Certification: Step by Step from Sign-Up to Annual Renewal

Getting SAP certified in plant maintenance takes twelve steps, all of them described on SAP's official pages in October 2026. They run from choosing the right exam (C_S43 for Asset Management on private cloud or on-premise) and setting up an SAP Universal ID to the three-hour practical activity, the Credly badge, and keeping the credential valid every 12 months. The public exam page lists no formal prerequisite of a degree, employment with an SAP partner, or years of experience.

SAP does not publish how many hours or weeks of study the exam takes. The decisions that change the cost sit at three points along the way: the product that gives access to the exam, eligibility for the free student edition, and how you keep the credential in the following years.

The full sequence, from sign-up to annual maintenance

The order below follows SAP's guide for practical exams and its certification support pages, as published in October 2026.

  1. Confirm the ERP edition and the exam. For Asset Management on SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition or on-premise, the exam is C_S43. For the public cloud, the credential is the general C_S4CPB.
  2. Set up your SAP Universal ID. SAP requires a single Universal ID with at least two email addresses on different domains.
  3. Choose how you access the exam. The options are the student edition, the SAP Certification exam, two attempts package, and an SAP Learning Hub subscription.
  4. Study the official learning path. The exam page recommends the Learning Journey Implementing Asset Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition.
  5. Practice in the journey's system. The assessment takes place inside an SAP system, and the exam page tells you to practice there first.
  6. Reread the exam page and check your equipment. SAP publishes a technical readiness checklist covering hardware, software, browser, connectivity, and security.
  7. Start or reserve the exam. Access is through the Go to Certification Exam button on the certification page, or from the Learning Journey.
  8. Complete the activity in a single session. The timer keeps running during breaks, and you submit with Confirm Completion.
  9. Check your result. It appears under My Learning, in My Certifications.
  10. Claim your digital badge. SAP issues the badge on Credly and sends it to the primary email address of your Universal ID.
  11. Share the badge address. The badge page lets anyone check the issuer, the credential, and its validity.
  12. Maintain the certification every year. The 12-month validity is renewed through the Stay Certified assessment or by passing the full exam again.

The official name, study areas, price by country, and what is no longer sold are covered on the page about SAP PM certification.

Which exam to choose before you start

C_S43 is specific to maintenance. C_S4CPB covers public cloud implementation in general, and the Asset Management courses for that edition lead to a Record of Achievement, which proves study and is not a certification. The comparison between editions is in SAP Cloud ERP public vs. private. If your work is maintenance planning, execution, or management instead of system configuration, compare the credentials outside SAP first in best certifications for SAP PM and maintenance.

How to set up the SAP Universal ID

The SAP Universal ID is the single identity that links a person's accounts to SAP's learning and certification services. In the practical exam, SAP validates identity through it instead of through a proctor on camera.

  • The Universal ID needs at least two email addresses on different domains.
  • If you have more than one S-user or P-user, log on to SAP Learning with the user your certification subscription is assigned to, and keep all of them linked to the Universal ID.
  • The badge is issued to the primary email address of the Universal ID, so check that address before the exam.

Standalone exam, Learning Hub, or student edition: how to decide

How to study and practice before the exam

Self-paced content on the SAP Learning site is free. The C_S43 learning path covers Asset Management business processes, technical objects, preventive maintenance, phase-based maintenance and checklists, refurbishment of spare parts, and configuration. SAP says that completing the courses and exercises is not mandatory before the exam, but is highly recommended, even for experienced candidates.

System practice depends on the product you bought:

  • The two-attempt package gives 10 hours of access to certification-relevant practice systems.
  • In Learning Hub, SAP removed the former 60-hour limit and allows two simultaneous enrollments in courses with a system.
  • Each enrollment has a start and an end date, shown on the enrollment screen. The end date cannot be extended. After it passes, you enroll again.
  • Some systems are ready immediately and others take up to 90 minutes. The setup guide contains your credentials and the exercises.

What are the rules on exam day?

C_S43 is a System Based Assessment: a three-hour activity in English, with tasks carried out in an SAP system and a 70% passing score. The rules below come from SAP's support pages for this type of assessment.

  • Reservation. When the system requires a time slot, the reservation does not use an attempt. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the exam, and SAP sends a reminder 24 hours before it starts. You cannot book another exam while one is scheduled.
  • Start. The exam screen shows the time limit and your remaining attempts. You accept the terms, download the setup guide and the tasks, and open the system in a new tab.
  • Time. The activity must be finished in a single session. Breaks are allowed, but the timer keeps running.
  • Resources. The exam is open book and has no live proctor. SAP names the SAP Help Portal, the SAP Learning site, SAP Community and, where applicable, SAP Joule for Consultants and other AI tools.
  • Submission. The activity is submitted only when you click Confirm Completion.
  • Technical issues. If clearing the cache and switching browser or connection does not help, create a support case with a description, the steps that led to the issue, and screenshots. When SAP confirms a system error, a new attempt may be granted.

Results and retakes

After you confirm completion, the attempt goes under review. SAP says the review usually takes about 15 minutes, and the result appears under My Learning, in My Certifications, with a score report for system-based assessments.

SAP names two common causes of a failed attempt: the activity's time ran out or the passing score was not reached. If you still have attempts, you schedule a new exam. Your balance is shown under My subscriptions. The two-attempt package has two attempts, and Learning Hub has four per year.

The C_S43 page does not publish an attempt limit of its own or a minimum wait between attempts. The rule of up to four attempts in 12 months, with a 24-hour wait between them and a one-year wait after a fourth failure, is published for scenario-based assessments and should not be applied to C_S43 without confirmation from SAP.

Digital badge and employer verification

When you pass, SAP sends the badge by email, issued on Credly. Creating a Credly account with the same email address you use on SAP Learning, claiming the badge, and sharing it cost nothing. The badge replaces the certificate file: you can share it on social networks or by email and download a PDF. In a hiring process, what counts is the address of the badge page, where the employer sees the issuer, the credential, and the validity date.

How to keep the certification in the following years

The certification is valid for 12 months. Under My Learning, each credential shows the status Valid, Stay certified due, or Expired, and the date next to Stay certified due is the deadline for the annual assessment.

  1. Track the date under My Learning. The assessment window opens 90 days before expiry and closes on the expiry date.
  2. Study the update content. For C_S43, it is the course SAP S/4HANA Cloud Private Edition, Asset Management, listed at 32 minutes on October 10, 2026.
  3. Take the Stay Certified assessment, a short unproctored quiz with unlimited tries. Access requires an SAP Learning Hub subscription.
  4. Check the new date under Manage Certification and on the Credly badge.

Two SAP pages disagree on the new date: one says the extension is 12 months from the original expiry date, and the other says 12 months from the day you pass the assessment. The date shown in your account is the one that counts.

Without Learning Hub, you maintain the certification by buying attempts and passing the full exam again every year. If you miss the deadline, you are no longer certified until you pass the exam again. SAP sends automated emails two weeks and one day before expiry.

What to do if SAP retires the credential

When a certification is retired, the exam and the maintenance assessment can no longer be booked. Anyone holding a valid certification on the retirement date gets another 12 months of validity from that date, with no new assessment. The next step is to read SAP's notice, look at the successor or alternative certification it recommends, and plan to pass the new exam before those 12 months end. After expiry, becoming certified again requires a full exam.

After certification, the maintenance routine

The exam assesses the configuration of Asset Management. The daily operation that configuration supports happens in the planner's schedule and in the maintenance order the technician executes and confirms in the field. PM RUN is the maintenance execution, mobility, and planning platform that runs on top of SAP PM without replacing it; PM RUN uses SAP PM on ECC 6.0 or on S/4HANA, on-premise or in the cloud.

The page on maintenance planning software shows what the planning team does on the platform.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a degree or experience to take the SAP certification exam?

The public C_S43 page lists no requirement of a degree, employment with a partner, or years of experience. What it asks for is access to the exam and a valid SAP Universal ID.

How long does it take to get SAP certified?

SAP does not publish an estimate in hours or months. The durations shown on the courses are the length of the content, without practice and review, and they do not guarantee a pass.

Can I use reference material during the C_S43 exam?

Yes. The practical exam is open book and has no live proctor. SAP names the SAP Help Portal, the SAP Learning site, and SAP Community among the resources.

What happens if I fail the exam?

If you have attempts left in your package or subscription, you can schedule a new exam. The standalone package includes two attempts and SAP Learning Hub includes four per year.

Do I have to schedule the exam in advance?

It depends on the system. Some are available immediately and others require a reserved time slot. A reservation does not use an attempt and can be canceled up to 24 hours before.

How do I renew my SAP certification?

By passing the Stay Certified assessment before the expiry date, which requires SAP Learning Hub, or by passing the full exam again. The assessment window opens 90 days before expiry.
