Industrial lubrication: how to build a lubrication plan that works

Industrial lubrication is the controlled application of the right lubricant, in the right amount, at the right interval, to every friction point in the plant. It is the preventive intervention with the best cost-benefit there is, and one of the most mistreated: done by habit, without a plan, it kills bearings by lack and by excess alike. The instrument that organizes it is the lubrication plan.

What the lubrication plan is

It is the document that answers, for every lubrication point in the plant: which lubricant, how much, how often, by which method and under whose responsibility. It is a chapter of the maintenance plan, dense enough to deserve its own structure.

Building the plan point by point

1. Point inventory

Survey every lubrication point per equipment: bearings, gearboxes, chains, guides, joints. Each point gets physical identification (a coded, colored tag) and a system record. An unidentified point is a point forgotten or greased twice.

2. Lubricant per point

Technical specification per point (type, viscosity, thickener for greases), consolidating variety: plants that never did this work often operate with dozens of lubricants where a fraction would do. Less variety, less chance of incompatible mixing, one of the silent killers of bearings.

3. Quantity and frequency

Quantity calculated from bearing dimensions or manufacturer guidance, not "until it comes out the seal": excess grease heats the bearing and pushes lubricant away from where it should be. Frequency defined by operating hours and environment severity, with intervals revised by what inspections find.

4. Lubrication routes

Points grouped by area and frequency become executable routes: a logical walking sequence, estimated time, route materials. Routes are what turn a thousand points into a manageable job of dozens of runs.

5. Owners: operations and maintenance

Simple, accessible points can migrate to operators within autonomous maintenance, with training and visual standards; points that demand technique, measured quantities or machine-stopped access stay with the professional lubricator. The split lives in the plan, never in habit.

The 5 classic lubrication mistakes

Excess grease (kills by heat); mixing incompatible lubricants (one thickener degrades the other); unidentified points; poor storage (open drums, contamination before use); and execution without records, which blocks any correlation analysis between lubrication and failure.

Recording: the route as a data source

Every route execution recorded in the system, with date, executor and anomalies found along the way (leaks, abnormal temperature, noise), turns lubrication into a historical series and the route into a walking sensor of the plant. In the digital flow, the route becomes a phone checklist and the anomaly becomes a notification on the spot, executed through an industrial maintenance app.
